Kay has been a partner with the firm since its inception in 1983 and practices defense litigation with a concentration on hospital and medical malpractice as well as workers’ compensation. In addition, she is a certified circuit court mediator and serves as Chancellor of the South Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church. Kay has a loyal client base that has come to expect and appreciate her hardworking, thoughtful, involved approach. She prides herself on closely listening to her clients and using her problem solving skills to get results.

Kay graduated from the University of California in 1972 and from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1975. While in law school, she was elected to the Order of the Wig and Robe and received American Jurisprudence Awards in Torts, Close Corporations, and Estate Planning. She is admitted to practice in South Carolina and before the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.

After graduation from law school, Kay worked for two years as a law clerk with the Social Security Administration. Following her clerkship, she joined the South Carolina Attorney General’s office and worked for five years as an Assistant Attorney General. She joined Alford, Johnson & Salane in 1982, just prior to the merger that created Barnes, Alford, Stork & Johnson, LLP.

Kay has been an active member of the South Carolina Bar and was the first woman elected President of the South Carolina Defense Attorneys Association. She currently serves on the South Carolina Commission on the Profession and is a member of the Federal of Defense and Corporate Counsel and serves as Hot Case Editor.
