David is a cum laude graduate of Ohio University with a B.A. degree in government. He received his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the South Carolina Bar, and the Richland County Bar Association.

David was a founding member of Barnes Alford and currently serves as one of the firm’s managing partners. His practice is devoted to real estate, banking, and corporate matters, with particular emphasis on commercial real estate. His real estate practice includes representation of lenders and developers in all types of projects, including shopping centers, lifestyle centers, hotels, office buildings, apartments, condominiums, and office/warehouse buildings. His responsibilities typically include handling land acquisitions, construction and permanent financing, title review, transaction document preparation, legal opinions, environmental issues, property development, leasing, and sales.

David frequently serves as local counsel for lenders and borrowers in connection with multi-state secured lending transactions. His banking practice includes serving as bank counsel in connection with secured lending transactions. His corporate practice includes the representation of business clients in the areas of formation, compliance, contracts, real estate, and financing.

David has been recognized by Best Lawyers in America, Super Lawyers, and Greater Columbia Business Monthly (as a Midlands Legal Elite) in the practice area of real estate law. He was also named by Best Lawyers as the 2014-15 Columbia, SC Real Estate Law “Lawyer of the Year.”

In addition to his practice, David is the firm’s member representative in the South Carolina Bankers Association, Central Carolina Realtors Association, and the International Council of Shopping Centers.

David is an active member of the Columbia community and has served on the board of directors for Communities in Schools of the Midlands, Richland County Public Library Trust, Carolina Care Plan, and the board of advisors for the A. C. Flora High School Foundation.

David authored the South Carolina chapter of the “State-by-State Guide to Commercial Real Estate Leases,” published in 2004 by Aspen Publishers, and all updates published thereafter.
